Bear Laker
Named after the sudden storms known locally as “Bear Lakers,” this programmatic work for wind ensemble paints the natural drama of Bear Lake. The music opens with a calm, picturesque setting that reflects the beauty of the lake before shifting into a turbulent storm filled with driving rhythms and powerful textures. Extended harmonies and shifting rhythmic patterns create a sense of awe and tension before the storm subsides, returning to a calm and reflective conclusion.
Solos for oboe, bassoon, and trumpet bring expressive character, but are also written into other instruments for maximum flexibility. At Grade 3, Bear Laker is both accessible and musically rewarding, offering directors a piece that develops ensemble precision, balance, and dynamic contrast. Whether programmed for concert stage, festival performance, or as a dramatic closer, Bear Laker will leave a lasting impression on both performers and audiences. Duration: 4:37.
